Redmond goes bye-bye

By DivineOmega | June 22, 2006

“Linux wasn’t started as any kind of rebellion against the ‘evil Microsoft empire.’

I’m not out to destroy Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect.”

Linus Torvalds (to the New York Times)

I do love that quote.

About a month or two ago I switched from Microsoft Windows to Ubuntu Linux, and since then I think I’ve become a lot more of a geek. Ok, this isn’t completely true, Windows is still there on my computer, but I very rarely use it - all it does now is moan about updates. Then my antivirus program kicks in and promptly spits out:

“Hi there! You’re not protected from thousands of acne-riddened teenage geeks with nothing better to do that write sad little programs which we are calling viruses. Let’s have fun and update!

Remember: As a antivirus corporation, we promote viruses as a serious threat, and fail to tell you that only common sense is required to defeat any virus. Er.. forgot that. Let’s update!!! Yay!”

I got sick of this, so I removed my virus scanner. Damn thing. Also, damn little teenage script-kiddies… which reminds me of interesting conversation I had with a tremendous ‘girl’ (I think) in an IRC chat room.

Pretty_girl101 wants to send you ‘free_xxx_passwords.exe’
DivineOmega: Hi..
DivineOmega: I’d just like to say, I run Linux. And that’s a virus, isn’t it?
Slight delay.
Pretty_girl101: er yea,,, wot’s Linxu?
DivineOmega left IRC (reason: ARGHHH!!! Fools!)

Since I’ve converted to Linux viruses aren’t a concern. They are less then 15 viruses for Linux. None of which are ‘in the wild’, which is another irratating term antivirus companies have made up to scare certain nieve Windows users. If I could have a pound for each new irratating and almost completely redundant buzz world the Internet have brought into the world, then I’d be richer then the almighty king of Redmond.
